Strong and Female
When I saw this lovely portrait the other day I knew I had to share it here. The first reason why I like it is because of the pose. If you are a regular reader of my blog, you will know that I love candid portraits. Although this isn't candid, it has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere to it. I suspect that photographer Jennifer Rakestraw took this shot when the model wasn't expecting her to. Another reason why this is such a great shot is because of the setting. The wall creates a negative space around the young woman and the contrast with her dark clothing really makes her stand out.
Ordinarily, when I approach a photographer to ask for permission to link to their photo, they say yes go ahead. On this occasion Jennifer said yes, and mentioned a project she is involved in, which resonated with me, and I decided that this had to be more than just another photo of the day.
Unapologetically Strong and Female
Jennifer is developing a blog https://www.strongandfemale.com/ "to offer encouragement for women by women" and uses her photography to do so. Through a series of five photographs and five questions she illustrates her ladies' stories, and you can really get a sense of who these ladies are, not only through their words but through Jennifer's images. In a world which all too often has not moved forward from the Middle Ages in its treatment of women, Jennifer's blog is an innovative way to help women find the respect and strength they deserve. I sincerely hope that this is just a starting point for this project and that it will develop into something great both for Jennifer and her participants.
Beyond this project, Jennifer is a talented portrait photographer. Please use the link above to see the image on 500px and take your time to browse through the rest of her portfolio. I'm sure that you'll like what you see.
