There is something about laundrettes that's fascinating, you get a real mixture of people using them, and the atmosphere. I remember, with some affection, the aroma of washing powder and the hot air emanating from the dryers. This photograph by Kathi Huidobro caught my eye recently. Firstly, I really like the cinematic quality of this shot, with the blue tones and the way the light reflects off the smooth shiny surfaces. Also, the leading lines in the scene take you through the laundrette and out into the street and the fresh air. I like the composition too, how Kathi has taken this shot just right of centre.
I discovered Kathi's work only a short time ago. I would describe her as an urban raconteur who sees the mundane and creates powerful images. I strongly suggest you use the link above to see the image on Flickr and take your time to browse through the rest of her work. You won't regret it.
