Work and family commitments make it difficult for most people to attend or follow regular classes. Thankfully, the Institute of Photography has designed all their online photography courses with that in mind.
How it works
Once you have enrolled on an IOP course, you have access to your course material on a restricted part of their website. The beauty of all their courses is that you can complete them entirely at your own pace. The only restriction is that you must log in to it at least once a year. Even after you have finished the course you continue to have unrestricted access to the content, which is updated on a regular basis.
Course units include well-explained and engaging theory, a short test to ensure you have understood it, and practical assignments. Most of these are non-compulsory but they provide you with an opportunity to practice what you’ve studied. The content is comprehensive covering all the necessary aspects of what you need to know. In addition, the feedback from the tutors on the work you submit is invaluable if you seriously wish to make progress. The tutors’ comments are personalised, referring to the images you have submitted, and always constructive. It’s amazing how once you get started, you feel guilty if you don’t study or submit work for evaluation. I didn’t think I would experience that from an online course.
Tim, the Institute’s director, is regularly available for online chats. And should you have an urgent query there is email support too. Furthermore, Institute of Photography students can join a private Facebook group where they can discuss anything relating to photography. Everyone in the group is very supportive and encouraging, a refreshing change from many other forums out there.
Should I do it?
There are lots of photography courses on the internet. But one thing is for sure: being an accredited CPD trainer, the IOP is a serious organisation that knows what it is talking about. The tutors are experienced professionals who will push your abilities and help you to improve. If you are looking for a course, I can’t recommend them highly enough.
